At this 4th and 5th Grade level, the Homework has a pattern to the routine.
Monday: Students get their Vocabulary/Spelling list for the week. These words are based on both vocabulary that has recently been used or will be used in their Reading Lesson stories, History, or Science lessons, and also might consist of some common spelling patterns to become familiar with. Monday's homework is simply to write the words 5 times each.
Tuesday's homework is to write 1 good, well-developed sentence for each word, thus, reinforcing the meaning of the word in context. Students share their favorite of their sentences the following morning, practicing Speaking Skills in this process.
Wednesday's homework varies somewhat. It may be a fill-in-the-blank exercise to reinforce word meaning and reading skills, a Word Search for the fun of working with language, and at times will consist of writing current events from watching the News.
Thursday's homework is always a Writing assignment. In most cases students are given 3 story Title choices and they are to choose one. These are often Fantasy, and usually consist of 1 choice that can be realistic. The students are given a minimum amount of words-in-length the Story must be. A handful of students are chosen to share their story aloud in front of the class. Periodically, students will choose their favorite stories and go through The Writing Process to edit and then "publish" the story.
EXTRA CREDIT for EXTRA HOMEWORK. Students are encouraged to go above the minimum required Homework and do extra, such as doubling the given assignment. Students are rewarded for doing extra.
